Plymouth North Carolina OLD FLAG Civil War Newspaper JEFFERSON DAVIS CAPTURE
EXTREMELY RARE! A quick online search revealed several digital copies located in various university libraries, but I was only able to locate one original copy, and it is in the collection of the Library of Congress. As best I can tell, this newspaper only lasted for two issues.
An original May 19, 1865 issue of THE OLD FLAG, published in published in Plymouth, North Carolina, by two members of the 2nd Mass. Volunteer Heavy Artillery, including Danvers, Massachusetts native Arthur A. Putnam. Plymouth had been captured by Union forces in October 1864, and this newspaper was for both the occupying troops and the civilian population.
Filled with amazing Civil War content, including:
various military orders (including an order forbidding the wearing of a Confederate uniform in the occupied lines, except by prisoners), an order allowing the killing of loose dogs, the surrender of General Joseph E Johnston's troops, cessation of hostilities in NC, the dawn of peace, the capture of Jefferson Davis, treatment of former slaves, rewards offered for the capture of Jefferson Davis and others for the murder of Abraham Lincoln ("it appears from evidence in the Bureau of Military Justice that the atrocious murder of the late President, Abraham Lincoln, and the attempted assassination of the Hon. W. H. Seward, Secretary of State, were incited, concerted and procured by and between Jeff. Davis, late of Richmond, Va., and Jacob Thompson, Clement C. Clay, Beverly Tucker, George N. Sanders, W. C. Cleary and other rebels and traitors against the government of the United States, harbored in Canada"), and a proclamation by President Andrew Johnson.
This 8" x 11 1/8" small-format 4-page issue is complete, with no repairs.
Guaranteed to be an original issue from 1865, and not a copy or reproduction.
