  • Condition: This antique original newspaper is fully complete and printed on durable cotton rag paper which holds up remarkably well and better than later newspapers printed on wood pulp paper. This issue was removed from a bound volume and has some chips and nicks on the edges, toning from age, some foxing in places and moderate handling wear. There are two small pieces of tape on the right edge of the front page and partial separation between pages along the spine edge. Overall condition is very good.

    Description

    This is an original antique Civil War era issue of the New York Times newspaper.  This is the fully complete ten page New York Times newspaper for Saturday, April 23, 1864.
    This issue is noteworthy for front page coverage of the prelude to the Overland Campaign that would begin in early May with the Battle of the Wilderness.  One front page article is titled:
    THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC – THE CAMPAIGN TOWARD RICHMOND – GRANT AGAINST LEE
    This issue also has content related to the Civil War in North Carolina, the beginning of the Red River Campaign in Louisiana, news from Washington DC and more.
